As you know, people prefer to do business with those they know, like, and trust. In the offline world, you build relationships with others in order to do business with them. In the online world, even though you don’t meet them face-to-face, you can still build strong relationships with perfect strangers. You can use your content to allow them to know, like, and trust you.
When you write content – whether it is a blog post, book, or social media comment – you really have 3 equally important goals:
Keeping these goals in mind will guide you toward writing content that strengthens your “brand” and grows your business. Your content will naturally be unique and stand out from the crowd.
Your readers are following a natural process. When your content is interesting and engaging, they read more. Putting in your personality makes your writing more interesting because it helps the reader find things they can identify with and it’s not just dry information. As they interact more with your content, they begin to feel like they know you. Then, the more they read, the more they allow you into their circle of trusted associates.
It becomes an easy step forward for them to buy your product or services because they’ve come to know, like, and trust you.
Consider these ways:
1. Tell personal stories to make your point. Use stories from your own life to illustrate your points. For example, if you’re talking about using a certain life coaching technique to solve a challenge, relate a story about how using that strategy has helped you or someone you know in overcoming the issue.
You don’t even need to make the stories about anything significant. You could start out a story like, “Yesterday, when I was at the grocery store, I heard this lady say…”, then go on to tell the story and show how it relates to whatever point you’re making.
Or maybe you want to do a piece about stress. You could start off with a story about the guy who got mad at you on the freeway this morning. That will get people interested. Then you can go on to explain how we can prevent stress from situations like these from ever becoming an issue in our lives.
Regardless of which medium you use to tell them, real life stories grab the attention of your audience and make them want to see more.
2. Share events in your life. For instance, if you have a new baby, share pictures (Most folks love babies!) and ways your baby has impacted your life, lessons you can learn from your baby, and more. When you get married, have a birthday, or go on an awesome trip, let your readers in on the fun, while at the same time relating your stories to some aspect of your business.
When you share, you welcome your audience into your life!
3. Interview other experts in your field. Show that even though you’re an expert, you can still learn from others. This shows your audience some admirable traits, like being open to other ideas, that you listen to the opinions of others, and that you’ll bring valuable content to your readers that they may be interested in, even if it’s tapping into someone else’s knowledge and experience. You show that you don’t feel that you’re the “be all” and “end all” of knowledge in your field.
4. Let others interview you. Show your expertise as you show your personality.
5. Make videos. When you explain a solution or how to do something, you show your personality in a myriad of ways.
6. Do Webinars. Interact with your audience.
7. Give your take on news events, books, or movies. You might want to stay away from normal discussions of religion or politics, but there are many other topics that are great for explaining your points and engaging your audience.
8. Every so often, give out other tidbits about your personality. For example, talk about what inspires you, makes you happy, or motivates you to take action. As always, relate this to your business message.
These techniques let your personality shine and help you achieve those three content goals: to inform, engage, and build a relationship. You can solidify and strengthen your professional image while making more of an impact on your audience. In the end, everyone wins.
